AV-Comparatives, or AV-C for short, is perhaps the most famous non-profit organization in the realms of antivirus testing. Headquartering Austria, it has been providing the free, multi-language antivirus tests and reports to people worldwide for years. All the major antivirus programs are tested and granted awards by AV-C every year.
Checkmark is another independent, authoritative certification for computer security products and services developed by West Coast Labs (WCL) in UK, an affiliated part of the Haymarket Media Group.
Competition exists not only between the vendors, but between the antivirus software testing organizations as well. AV-TEST Institute is a Germany-based organization which has been engaging in the computer security and malware research since 2004.
4. TopTenReviews
Antivirus testing is not the sole researching project of TopTenReviews, and there is no direct relation between the vendors and website. However, it presents a simple method of antivirus software comparison which is partly based on the ranks and awards given by the above organizations.
5. Virus Bulletin
In 1989, a magazine called Virus Bulletin was established in the UK. Over twenty years later, VB100 and VBSpam owned by Virus Bulletin had already become the commonest certifications for the computer security programs, as well as AV-C, Checkmark and AV-TEST.
Unfortunately, to read the full reports about antivirus software, you have to subscribe the magazine first. But you can read some free reviews which are quite enough for home users.
